Things I'm grateful for - beauty-wise and in general - in my life in 2017. Click to read.

It's the season of gratitude, and as I think about the things I'm grateful for this year, it strikes me that this year I'm back to basics. The things I'm grateful for are basic, simple, and vitally important in my life. So without further delay, here are the things I'm grateful for this year.

My health.

After my battle with breast cancer a few years ago, I developed an entirely different attitude about my health. To have someone say the words to you "you have cancer" is indescribable and instantly changes the way you view both your health and your life. To say that I'm grateful for my health is an understatement, and as I'm sure any cancer survivor will tell you, my health and the fact that I'm lucky to be in remission right now never leaves my mind.

My attitude.

Now that I'm a bit older, I'm much less concerned with what other people think of me, and much more concerned with doing what makes me happy. It definitely makes life more simple and carefree.

My family.

This goes for both my immediate family and extended family. I am grateful for all of our memories, and the memories we're currently making. This is a particularly important area of gratitude for me this year, as my family lost my beautiful aunt to cancer. We have to cherish every moment we have with each other.

My home.

As I write this, I am homesick for my house, which was rendered unlivable after Hurricane Harvey. My temporary living situation is an apartment, and it is easy to feel discouraged and upset that I can't be in my home. However, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I'm focusing on simply being grateful that I have a home to return to sometime in 2018.

Those who helped us after Hurricane Harvey.

So many people helped us after our home flooded. Perfect strangers took us into their home, countless people volunteered at our house as we were ripping out wet carpet and drywall, several folks made and brought food for the volunteers at the house, and many family and friends helped us in other ways. It was amazing and showed us just how wonderful and generous the people in our lives are. #HoustonStrong #FamilyStrong

Hyaluronic acid.

Ok, I had to throw a beauty product in the mix. Wow, what a difference this product has made in my skin. If you are unfamiliar with hyaluronic acid, it isn't "acidic" on the skin despite its name. It is fabulously moisturizing and makes the skin soft and smooth. You can find it in both drugstore and high-end serums and moisturizers everywhere. Two of my current favorites are Neutrogena Hydra Boost Water Gel and Skin Inc Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

The courage to start this journey as a beauty blogger.

I am grateful for all the support of my friends and family as I decided to take this blogging journey in 2017. It can be scary to try something new, and despite my more carefree attitude these days, I still wondered what others would think about a psychologist suddenly becoming a beauty blogger. I'm glad I did it.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! What are you grateful for this year?
