I am always on the lookout for a good night-time moisturizer, and when I ran across CeraVe's Skin Renewing Night Cream, I had to try it. For the past six weeks, I have tested this product. Here, I pit the cream's claims against what I experienced in my testing.
**Note: This is not a sponsored post and I purchased the CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream myself.**
The Claims:
According to the CeraVe website, the Skin Renewing Night Cream "helps refresh the look of tired skin overnight" and is appropriate for normal to oily, normal to dry, and dry to extra dry skin. It contains skin-refreshing ceramides (lipids), biomimetic peptides, and hyaluronic acid to help retain skin's natural moisture. Additionally, the cream incorporates MVE Technology (i.e., controlled release for 24-hour hydration). The combined result: The cream is said to help skin restore and maintain its protective barrier.
My Testing Method:
I used the cream every night for six weeks as my nightly moisturizer, which is always the last step in my evening skincare routine consisting of (a) cleanser, (b) toner, (c) exfoliation or a retinol serum, (d) hyaluronic acid serum, and (e) moisturizer. Therefore, I applied the cream to well-prepped skin. I did not vary the other products in my regimen during the testing period so as to perform a good test on the CeraVe cream.
My Skin Type:
I have combination and sensitive 47-year-old skin. I am oily throughout the T-zone and drier on the rest of my face.
- CeraVe's claim that the cream produces results overnight stood up to my testing: My skin felt nice and soft the morning after my first use. (However I didn't notice that my skin looked less "tired." I'm actually not sure what that would look like.)
- After a month of use, my skin felt softer overall and the dry patches on my combination skin were greatly reduced. The cream did its job and did it well.
- The cream did not make my skin look or feel oilier the next day.
- The cream has no smell and did not irritate my sensitive skin.
- The cream is a drugstore-priced product and a good value. As of this writing, a 1.7 ounce jar of the cream sells for $16.99 on the Ulta website and for $12.15 on Amazon. There is a $2.00 in-store coupon available here on the CeraVe website.
Cons:
- The texture of this cream takes some getting used to. It is thicker than what I was expecting and has more of a paste-like texture as opposed to a creamy texture. Definitely warm it up by rubbing it between your hands before applying for a smoother, more even application. Once I started doing this, the texture of the product was no longer an issue for me.
- Even an hour after application of the cream, my skin felt tacky. This was unsettling to me at first, but over time I got used to it. It's not a greasy feeling, so that's a plus, but you can certainly tell that you've applied a heavier product to your skin. This is definitely a night cream and you'd never be able to wear this under makeup in a pinch.
Final Thoughts:
This cream gave me nice, soft skin, and I recommend it for combination, normal, and dry skin that is well-prepped for a heavier moisturizer. If you have oily and/or younger skin, however, this is almost certainly not the product for you. I do think that some people will be put off by the paste-like texture at first, so be warned and be prepared to go through a "getting used to it" period. I will continue to use this product, although I will likely not use it during the humid Houston summer, when my skin tends to be oiler.
